At least 13 workers have been killed and 17 more wounded after an explosion hit a steel plant in China’s northeastern Liaoning province.

The incident occurred late Monday in a workshop at the Angang Heavy Machinery Company in the city of Anshan.

Song Jiachen, a company spokesman, said on Tuesday that local officials are working to find the cause of the incident.

"The rescue work just finished. The bodies of the three missing workers have been found," Song said.

The injured have been shifted to a local hospital for treatment, local officials said.

Workplace accidents are common in China due to weak safety rules, reports indicate.

Figures from China’s State Administration of Work Safety show about 50,000 people have been killed in work-related accidents in the first nine months of 2011.
